Many of these images of exalted figures and concepts related to spirituality and worship are specific to the Black American experience\, or are re-imagined in a Black cultural context. References to Greek mythology\, the Judeo-Christian tradition\, ancient cultures and traditional African spiritual practices appear alongside one another.  \nThe exhibition includes work by celebrated artists including Romare Bearden\, Henry Ossawa Tanner\, Richmond Barthé\, John Biggers\, Willie Cole\, Shinique Smith\, Tawny Chatmon\, Imo Nse Imeh and Sharif Bey\, among others. Selections in Queens\, Gods\, and Devotees are drawn entirely from the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art. The PFF Collection is a targeted initiative to bring focus to the full range of African American visual creativity and its essential place in the history and discourse of American Art. As part of a growing and thoughtful dialogue about the African American experience through art\, the PFF Collection seeks to visually represent a cross-section of themes that speak not only to the African American community\, but also the broader American community.  \nCurated by Susanna W. CLICK HERE to pre-register for visitor parking. \n\n\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				 \n\nIn 2020\, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and amid renewed national attention to racial injustice following the killings of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd\, artist Dr. Imo Nse Imeh created Feeding the Veins of the Earth as a visual prayer. Part of his Benediction series\, the painting imagines angels bound to the bodies of Black boys and men\, bearing witness to both suffering and hope. Drawing on Christian imagery of death\, resurrection\, and blessing\, the series explores the spiritual\, social\, and political dimensions of race\, identity\, and belonging. \nReflecting on the theological and personal questions that shaped the series\, Imeh considers how Benediction has evolved into a broader inquiry into faith\, citizenship\, and social belonging. Bringing together art\, religion\, and social justice\, the lecture invites audiences to consider the role of creative practice in confronting injustice and imagining new possibilities for human dignity and communal life. \nImeh’s work is featured in the Cantor Art Gallery’s Fall 2026 exhibition\, Queens\, Gods\, and Devotees\, on view from August 25-November 24\, 2026.
