Many of these images of exalted figures and concepts related to spirituality and worship are specific to the Black American experience\, or are re-imagined in a Black cultural context. References to Greek mythology\, the Judeo-Christian tradition\, ancient cultures and traditional African spiritual practices appear alongside one another.  \nThe exhibition includes work by celebrated artists including Romare Bearden\, Henry Ossawa Tanner\, Richmond Barthé\, John Biggers\, Willie Cole\, Shinique Smith\, Tawny Chatmon\, Imo Nse Imeh and Sharif Bey\, among others. Selections in Queens\, Gods\, and Devotees are drawn entirely from the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art. The PFF Collection is a targeted initiative to bring focus to the full range of African American visual creativity and its essential place in the history and discourse of American Art. As part of a growing and thoughtful dialogue about the African American experience through art\, the PFF Collection seeks to visually represent a cross-section of themes that speak not only to the African American community\, but also the broader American community. \nCurated by Susanna W. He works with scanners\, satellites\, cameras and software\, leaves their workings in plain view\, and draws by hand into what they produce. He is best known for Postcards from Google Earth (2010–ongoing)\, a collection of the melting bridges\, draping highways and folded terrain thrown off by Google’s automated 3D maps. His recent work turns on the moment data becomes a surface. In pointcloud.garden\, 3D scans of real gardens drift across screens as slow fields of points. In Google Trees\, a scan of a single tree is printed onto folded steel and built at full scale. The work takes the form of prints\, screens\, textiles and sculpture. \nHis work has been exhibited at ZKM | Center for Art and Media\, Karlsruhe; Museum Morsbroich\, Leverkusen; the Moscow Museum of Modern Art; V&A Dundee; Dongdaemun Design Plaza\, Seoul; the Macao International Art Biennale; MU\, Eindhoven; and the Museum of the Moving Image\, New York. His projects have been covered by The Guardian\, TIME\, Wired\, Artforum\, El País\, Domus and Smithsonian Magazine\, among others. \nValla holds a BA from Columbia University and an MFA in Digital+Media from the Rhode Island School of Design\, where he is Professor and founding head of the Computation\, Technology\, and Culture department. He previously served as dean of Experimental and Foundation Studies. He is represented by bitforms gallery. Born 1979\, he lives and works in Providence\, Rhode Island. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nImage 1: Inkjet print on Hahnemuhle rice paper\, archival pen and colored pencil13 x 18 in\, unframed13 x 18 in / 33 x 45.7 cm care of bitforms gallery. \n \nImage 2: Clement Valla\, image courtesy of bitforms gallery
