SUMMARY:Reframing Identity Through Our Histories: Hilary Doyle\, Colleen Fitzgerald & Leslie Schomp
DESCRIPTION:Cantor Art Gallery\n \n \n \n \n \n Reframing Identity Through Our Histories\n \n \n \n \n \n Hilary Doyle\, Colleen Fitzgerald & Leslie Schomp\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nHilary Doyle\, Colleen Fitzgerald\, and Leslie Schomp discuss their work currently on view at the Cantor Art Gallery. Each artist uniquely foregrounds the role of history in examining contemporary society\, whether through familial history\, historic figures\, or cultural heritage traditions. Each mines personal or public archives to consider how we deal with the past to speak to contemporary issues around gender equality\, social issues\, memory\, and the self. \nDoyle explores the life and work of German scientific illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) to highlight the persistent need for women to push against societal norms. Fitzgerald reimagines family portraiture and self-portraiture by examining how we hold on to memories and construct personal histories. Schomp uses the history of lace and needlework to address issues such as political polarization\, gun violence\, and women’s sexuality. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n\n \n \n \n \n \n March 25\, 2026\n12:30 p.m.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCantor Art Gallery\n3rd Floor\, Prior Performing Arts Center

SUMMARY:Winter Homecoming Concert: Julianna Stratton ’26\, cello & Robert Gardner ’26\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Department of Music\n \n \n \n \n \n Winter Homecoming Concert\n \n \n \n \n \n Julianna Stratton ’26\, cello\n \n \n \n \n \n Robert Gardner ’26\, piano\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nThis program explores the complex themes of memory\, political resistance\, and the formation of identity through place and experience. Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata\, a classical example of a composer writing music grappling with the political environment of his time\, is paired with a selection from his student\, Galina Ustvolskaya’s “Grand Duet\,” a work that challenges the normative compositional and musical boundaries of her time. \nTogether\, these works take us on a musical journey of resistance and creativity in the face of oppression\, ranging from cosmic\, soaring melodies\, to angry\, hammering\, defiance. In the words of Ustvolskaya herself: “The important thing is that the music is genuine and strong.” \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n February 7\, 202612 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCantor Art Gallery3rd Floor\, Prior Performing Arts Center

DESCRIPTION:Cantor Art Gallery\n \n \n \n \n \n Concert: The Odyssey–from Vietnam to America\n \n Reseve Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMarking the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War\, The Odyssey–from Vietnam to America explores the personal and spiritual journeys of the Vietnamese refugees known as “Boat People.” \nThe Odyssey musically contextualizes them in larger terms of human struggle for survival in the face of conflict and political upheaval. The work\, created by composer-performer Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ in partnership with Yerba Buena Center for Performing Arts (YBCA)\, Creative Work Fund (CWF)\, and Asia Society Texas Center (ASTC)\, combines Vietnamese instruments\, electronic sounds and Western instruments. Vietnamese folk songs\, especially lullabies\, are a key compositional element. \nVân-Ánh Vanessa Võ and the Blood Moon Orchestra perform with the Arneis Quartet in a special performance at the College of the Holy Cross. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n November 4\, 20257:30 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free entry\, registration required. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nLuth Concert HallPrior Performing Arts Center

SUMMARY:The Vietnamese Áo Dài in a Time of War: Fashion\, Citizenship\, and Nationalism (1954–1975)
DESCRIPTION:Cantor Art Gallery\n \n \n \n \n \n The Vietnamese Áo Dài in a Time of War\n \n \n \n \n \n Fashion\, Citizenship\, and Nationalism (1954–1975)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nThe Vietnamese Áo Dài in a Time of War explores the significance of Vietnam’s national costume—the áo dài—during the Vietnam War. \nHonoring the 50th anniversary of a conflict\, the legacies of which continue to haunt us to this day\, the exhibition highlights the contributions of Vietnamese women to politics\, society\, and culture. Artifacts trace the history of the áo dài as a practical item of clothing and important symbol of Vietnamese heritage and identity in Vietnam\, among Vietnamese Americans\, and on the global stage—thus showing how a national costume can be both traditional and modern fashion with meanings that change over time and space. \nCo-curated by Professors Ann Marie Leshkowich (Anthropology\, College of the Holy Cross)\, Martina Nguyen (History\, Baruch College\, City University of New York)\, and Tuong Vu (Political Science\, University of Oregon). \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Exhibition Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nPanel: Fashion\, Politics\, and Cultural Identity: The Vietnamese Áo DàiThursday\, September 11 | 4:30 p.m.Rehm Library (Smith Hall) \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nOpening Reception: The Vietnamese Áo Dài in a Time of WarThursday\, September 11 | 6 p.m.Cantor Art Gallery \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nFilm Screening: Journey from the FallFriday\, September 12 | 5 p.m.Rehm Library (Smith Hall) \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nLiving Threads: Community\, Culture and the Áo DàiThursday\, October 23 | 4 p.m.The Beehive at The Prior \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nConcert: The Odyssey–from Vietnam to AmericaTuesday\, November 4 | 7:30 p.m.Luth Concert Hall in The Prior \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nWorkshop: The Politics of National Costume in AsiaFriday & Saturday\, November 7 & 8Rehm Library (Smith Hall) \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n August 26-December 19\, 2025 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nIris & B. SUMMARY:Room of Wonders: A Worcester Wunderkammer
DESCRIPTION:Cantor Art Gallery\n \n \n \n \n \n Room of Wonders: A Worcester Wunderkammer\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nRoom of Wonders is the first in a series of annual summer exhibitions that foregrounds and celebrates the Worcester arts community at the Cantor Art Gallery. Each year\, a Worcester-based arts professional is invited to curate an exhibition of their choosing with the objective of focusing on the local community.  \nIn this inaugural show\, Birgit Straehle—co-owner of The White Room celebration hall and gallery and formerly co-manager of the iconic Sprinkler Factory—invites nearly 30 creatives to participate in this group exhibition. Each artist is based in or has a connection to Worcester\, celebrating the individuality and scope of the talent in our community. \nThe word Wunderkammer translates to “cabinet of curiosity\,” which refers to the mid-16th century European tradition of displaying personal collections of fascinating and unusual objects. The collections typically included all manner of scientific specimens\, natural phenomena\, artworks\, antiquities\, and anthropological artifacts. Straehle updates the tradition in a uniquely Worcester Wunderkammer that includes the spoken word\, hand-crafted musical instruments\, auditory experiences\, fashion\, and other works of art and wonder. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Featured Artists\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Abu MwenyeAlice DillonAmanda Kidd-KestlerAndrew HainesBeryl RosenblumCaelum LamCesar RodriguesCliff HuntDan HuntEric Cruze \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Eva RosenstielHarvey BallJames DyeJennessa BurksJesse Kenas-CollinsJosé CriolloKatie DyeKristen KiefferLouie DespresMadeleine Lord \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Michael HacheyMichael RosensteinThe CreativesThe Poet’s CauldronTim DoyleTim GannonTim JohnsonTomo SakaiTrevor Toney \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Exhibition Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nArtist/Curator Talks:Michael Hachey | 12-2 p.m.Cesar Rodrigues | 3-4 p.m.Wednesday\, July 16 | 12-5 p.m. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nRoom of Wonders Closing ReceptionThursday\, July 17 | 5-7 p.m. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Special Summer Hours\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nWednesdays\, Thursdays\, & Fridays | 12-5 p.m. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n June 11-July 17\, 2025 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nIris & B. This retrospective exhibition celebrating his sculptural practice investigates duality and hierarchy as a dialogue between technology-assisted and handmade forms. Beatty’s work\, inclusive of prints and drawings\, is informed by concepts and visual culture taken from science\, nature\, and mathematics. Beatty’s sculptures and drawings are evocative hybrids of geometry and biological form. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n January 21-April 5\, 2025 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nIris & B. Why\, then\, do we perceive them as blue and how does science make that possible?  Of course\, some things are colored by pigments — we will explore the science of those colors as well. \nJoin us for this fascinating conversation at the Cantor Art Gallery with Class Deans and Professors Sarah Petty (Chemistry) and Rob Bellin (Biology) about the science of color. \nFree entry and blue-colored snacks provided! \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n\n \n \n \n \n \n October 22\, 2024\n4:00 PM\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nIris & B.
