SUMMARY:Shiny-Shop Workshop with Birgit Straehle
DESCRIPTION:Shiny-Shop with Birgit Straehle\n \n \n \n \n \n Metal Leaf Application Workshop\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nCreate your own Wunderkammer Object in this Metal Leaf Application workshop from Room of Wonders curator Birgit Straehle. Free and open to the public for patrons ages 10 and up\, read more about this amazing opportunity below: \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBring Your Own Object\nIn preparation for the workshop: think about and bring your own individual wondrous object that you’d like to “glow-up.” Please choose an object with a firm surface (not made of paper\, etc.) and please limit the size of your object to 4 inches in both directions. Note: the flatter the object\, the easier the application process. Oyster shells are available for patrons unable to bring objects of their own. Please find examples of objects in the image below.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nTimeline\nParticipants are encouraged to by 10 a.m. to begin application of glue. With up to 30 minutes of glue cure time\, participants can enjoy their visit to the gallery during this time. Application of metal leaf comes next\, which Birgit will demonstrate on one oyster shell\, followed by a brush-in technique. Finally\, the workshop will end before noon to allow for a transition to the next gallery event: a Luthier Talk and Soundkammer Performance from Dan Hunt\, Charles Ketter & Nynez Lopez.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, June 2810 a.m.-12 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nIris & B. SUMMARY:Artist Talk and Soundkammer Performance: Michael Rosenstein and Stella Silbert
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk & Soundkammer Performance\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMichael Rosenstein constructed the 4-channel sound piece “Found Sound for Wunderkammer” for the Room of Wonders exhibit at the Cantor Art Gallery. SUMMARY:Room of Wonders: A Worcester Wunderkammer
DESCRIPTION:Cantor Art Gallery\n \n \n \n \n \n Room of Wonders: A Worcester Wunderkammer\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nRoom of Wonders is the first in a series of annual summer exhibitions that foregrounds and celebrates the Worcester arts community at the Cantor Art Gallery. Each year\, a Worcester-based arts professional is invited to curate an exhibition of their choosing with the objective of focusing on the local community.  \nIn this inaugural show\, Birgit Straehle—co-owner of The White Room celebration hall and gallery and formerly co-manager of the iconic Sprinkler Factory—invites nearly 30 creatives to participate in this group exhibition. Each artist is based in or has a connection to Worcester\, celebrating the individuality and scope of the talent in our community. \nThe word Wunderkammer translates to “cabinet of curiosity\,” which refers to the mid-16th century European tradition of displaying personal collections of fascinating and unusual objects. The collections typically included all manner of scientific specimens\, natural phenomena\, artworks\, antiquities\, and anthropological artifacts. Straehle updates the tradition in a uniquely Worcester Wunderkammer that includes the spoken word\, hand-crafted musical instruments\, auditory experiences\, fashion\, and other works of art and wonder. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Featured Artists\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Abu MwenyeAlice DillonAmanda Kidd-KestlerAndrew HainesBeryl RosenblumCaelum LamCesar RodriguesCliff HuntDan HuntEric Cruze \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Eva RosenstielHarvey BallJames DyeJennessa BurksJesse Kenas-CollinsJosé CriolloKatie DyeKristen KiefferLouie DespresMadeleine Lord \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Michael HacheyMichael RosensteinThe CreativesThe Poet’s CauldronTim DoyleTim GannonTim JohnsonTomo SakaiTrevor Toney \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Exhibition Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nArtist/Curator Talks:Michael Hachey | 12-2 p.m.Cesar Rodrigues | 3-4 p.m.Wednesday\, July 16 | 12-5 p.m. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nRoom of Wonders Closing ReceptionThursday\, July 17 | 5-7 p.m. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Special Summer Hours\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nWednesdays\, Thursdays\, & Fridays | 12-5 p.m. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n June 11-July 17\, 2025 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nIris & B. SUMMARY:Lunchtime Concert Series | The Late 20th Century Piano Music of Japan: Contrasts in Modern
DESCRIPTION:Department of Music\n \n \n \n \n \n The Late 20th Century Piano Music of Japan: Contrasts in Modern\n \n \n \n \n \n Lunchtime Concert Series\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nUlysses Loken\, piano\nThe Messiaen-influenced harmonic and gestural language of Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996) is set against the elegant modal counterpoint of Takashi Yoshimatsu (b. 1953)\, with influences of Bach\, Satie\, jazz\, and progressive rock. \nTakemitsu’s Rain Tree Sketch (1982) and Rain Tree Sketch II – In Memoriam Olivier Messiaen (1992)\, written in his mature compositional language\, melds western classical music with Japanese aesthetics and traditions. The concept of ma\, of empty space\, influences the structure and sound of these pieces. \nYoshimatsu describes the Pleiades Dances IV (1992) as “a new form of preludes for the modern piano.” This set is a study of pedal points\, the subtle counterpoint dancing around the fixed notes. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 16\, 202512:00 PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nThe BeehiveThe Prior Performing Arts Center

For the American energy company Enron\, it was worth billions . . . until it wasn’t. When CEO Kenneth Lay gives golden boy Jeff Skilling free rein at Enron\, the company soars to new financial heights\, while whiz kid Andy Fastow struggles to keep the bubble from bursting. If more is always better and rules are only for everyday folks\, how could they possibly lose? \nThe British playwright Lucy Prebble’s darkly comic take on real-life events shows how ambition\, delusion and boy’s-club insiderism led to one of the biggest financial scandals of the new millennium. \nScott Malia directs. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nEVENING PRESENTATIONS\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nTHU APR 3 @ 7:30 PMFRI APR 4 @ 7:30 PMSAT APR 5 @ 7:30 PMTHU APR 10 @ 7:30 PMFRI APR 11 @ 7:30 PMSAT APR 12 @ 7:30 PM \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMATINEE PRESENTATIONS\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nSUN APR 6 @ 2:00 PMSUN APR 13 @ 2:00 PM \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 3\, 4\, 5\, 10\, 11\, and 12 at 7:30 PMApril 6 and 13 at 2:00 PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n $15 Public | $10 Holy Cross Community \n \n \n \n \n \n Contact the box office at priorboxoffice@holycross.edu for assistance with Card to Culture ticket purchases. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBoroughs TheatreThe Prior Performing Arts Center

Comprised of 18 accomplished Black and Latino artists who reflect the highest level of musicianship in America\, a critical aim of the Sphinx Virtuosi is to evolve the breadth and impact of classical music through artistic excellence\, pioneering programming\, and impassioned community engagement. Its members serve as cultural ambassadors for audiences and communities around the United States and abroad. \nSince 2004\, the Sphinx Virtuosi’s concerts have been presented by leading arts organizations\, including annual return visits to Carnegie Hall as an established highlight of the fall season. Frequently selling out venues\, the ensemble has garnered effusive accolades\, including from The New York Times\, that has described the group as “top-notch…more essential at this moment than ever…a vibrant\, assured performance” and The Washington Post that wrote “true to their name\, the Sphinx Virtuosi call up the vision of an iconic mythological feline with its immeasurable power\, unwavering command\, and soulful beauty.” Their debut album\, Songs for Our Times\, was released on Deutsche Grammophon in July 2023 and represents the rich history of the Sphinx Organization and the vibrant future of classical music by centering the artistry of extraordinary composers and artistic visionaries.  \nTheir 2024-25 season includes performances for Washington Performing Arts and the John F. Kennedy Center\, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society\, the Symphony Center Presents in Chicago\, IL\, and a return performance at the New World Symphony in Miami. \nHeralded for its kaleidoscopically varied repertoire and bold thematic programming\, Sphinx Virtuosi concerts give prominence to historically excluded composers such as Samuel Coleridge-Taylor\, Alberto Ginastera\, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson\, Florence Price\, Heitor Villa-Lobos\, and George Walker.
