Part of his Benediction series\, the painting imagines angels bound to the bodies of Black boys and men\, bearing witness to both suffering and hope. Drawing on Christian imagery of death\, resurrection\, and blessing\, the series explores the spiritual\, social\, and political dimensions of race\, identity\, and belonging. \nReflecting on the theological and personal questions that shaped the series\, Imeh considers how Benediction has evolved into a broader inquiry into faith\, citizenship\, and social belonging. Bringing together art\, religion\, and social justice\, the lecture invites audiences to consider the role of creative practice in confronting injustice and imagining new possibilities for human dignity and communal life. \nImeh’s work is featured in the Cantor Art Gallery’s Fall 2026 exhibition\, Queens\, Gods\, and Devotees\, on view from August 25-November 24\, 2026. The film highlights the explosive emergence of UCLA’s 1960’s Black filmmaking students\, rooting their productions in social justice and community service\, creating a ripple effect for Indigenous\, Chicano\, and Asian filmmakers at UCLA throughout the 1970s and 80s. \nJubran\, a Palestinian feminist filmmaker\, and UCLA graduate\, follows her predecessors with experience spanning from collaborations with legendary Palestinian filmmakers Annemarie Jacir and Elia Sulieman\, leading to her award-winning short film Don’t Be Long\, Little Bird. Her writing has appeared in numerous publications including Obsidian: Literature & Arts in the African Diaspora\, The Best American Poetry\, Letters to the Future: Black Women/Radical Writing and A Poet’s Craft: A Comprehensive Guide to Making and Sharing Your Poetry. She’s the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a Japan Creative Artists Fellowship\, the Heinz Foundation’s Carol Brown Award\, and the inaugural Lucille Clifton Legacy Award from Saint Mary’s College of Maryland. \nBorn and raised in Topeka\, Kansas\, Gary Jackson is the author of the poetry collections\, small lives\, (University of New Mexico Press\, 2025) origin story (University of New Mexico Press\, 2021)\, both part of the Mary Burritt Christiansen Poetry Series\, and Missing You\, Metropolis (Graywolf\, 2010)\, which received the 2009 Cave Canem Poetry Prize. He’s also co-editor of The Future of Black: Afrofuturism\, Black Comics\, and Superhero Poetry (Blair\, 2021). His poems have appeared in numerous journals including Callaloo\, The Sun\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, Gulf Coast\, and Copper Nickel. He’s published work in several anthologies\, including Shattered: The Asian American Comics Anthology\, African American Poetry: 250 Years of Struggle and Song\, and A Measure of Belonging: Twenty-One Writers of Color on the New American South. He was featured in the 2013 New American Poetry Series by the Poetry Society of America\, and received fellowships and residencies from Cave Canem\, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, and Art Omi. As October gives us darker evenings\, the program takes listeners through autumn landscapes\, shifting light\, and imaginations running wild. \nAutumn is a season of change. The brilliant colors of fall in New England gradually give way to bare branches and longer nights\, creating a landscape that is stark\, reflective\, and mysterious. \nThe program begins in the warmth of the season with works such as Julie Giroux’s Bookmarks from Japan and Percy Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry. Eric Whitacre’s October captures the character of autumn itself\, evoking the feelings of the season through rich musical colors. \nAs the evening unfolds\, the music moves toward twilight\, mystery\, and darkness. The country plays host to the Estonian Song Festival\, which started in 1869 and currently runs every five years\, is one of the largest singing festivals in the world\, welcoming over 100\,000 people coming together to unite in song. Kreek’s Notebook celebrates the rich heritage of Estonian Choral Music through the use of native folk hymns collected by ethnomusicologist Cyrillus Kreek (1889–1962). Korvits weaves sacred folk hymns and texts collected by Kreek into his own distinct musical language. A multi-movement work for string orchestra and choir\, Kreek’s Notebook synthesizes traditional melodies with thrilling avant-garde string writing\, inviting the listener into moments of spiritual contemplation and visceral passion. \nAdditional works on the program include music by Arvo Pärt\, Veljo Tormis\, Algirdas Martinaitis\, and Laura Jekabsone. The composer described the piece as “the biggest butterfly in captivity.” \nExact repetitions\, subtle variations\, shifting patterns and fresh new materials are interwoven. Materials are constantly recontextualized\, using different voicing and registers\, changing one note of a chord\, juxtaposing new harmonies—always changing and always soft. The piece is not outwardly triadic (the harmonies are built entirely of seconds\, sevenths and augmented fourths)\, but triads emerge through the hazy resonance. Some materials happen only once\, while others are repeated\, varied and recontextualized. \nThe listener is taken on a journey of deep concentration and reflection. Pianist/composer Amy Williams has been connected to Feldman’s music since her childhood—her father and Feldman were close colleagues at the University of Buffalo. Executive Director & Choir Director \nAlma was born in Damascus\, Syria and holds a law degree from Damascus University and an LL.M. master’s degree in international legal studies from the American University\, Washington College of Law in Washington D.C. \nShe worked at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Damascus as an advocate to determine the refugee Status. In Syria\, in 2001-2005\, Alma studied singing with and trained by the best music and singing teachers at the Syrian Higher Institute for Music. Between 2000 and 2008\, Alma was a conductor of Al Farah Choir at the Lady of Damascus Church in Damascus. She conducted the Choir’s youth division concentrating on concerts to fundraise for humanitarian causes and children’s rights.During her LL.M Studies\, she worked as a teaching assistant to Arab League Ambassador to the UN and Professor Clovis Maksoud at the American University\, Washington College of Law. \nAfter moving to Boston\, she worked as a research intern at the Boston Consortium for Gender Security and Human Rights at the University of Massachusetts. Her research concentrated on the rights of women in Arab and Middle countries from legal\, historic\, cultural\, religious and humanitarian perspectives.In Boston\, Alma is the Executive Director of the Center for Arabic Culture (CAC)\, a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating the Arabic Culture and an Arab American experience through education and the arts. \nShe teaches Arabic culture and international law courses at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the College of the Holy Cross. \nAlma is the founder and choir director of the Children’s Choir and Jazal Choir at the Center for Arabic Culture in Boston. She is on the board of the Mansfield Local Cultural Council. Are we caretakers? Co-inhabitants? Destroyers? Forest fire has become the norm in our lives\, rather than the exception\, and we must face these questions head-on if we are to change this trajectory and protect our precious forests. \nPerformances of From The Ashes are accompanied by community engagement with local ecologists and forest-fire experts about the changing paradigm of how we approach wildland fires\, as well as the intersection of art making and ecological activism. This program was piloted during the April 2024 workshop residency of the piece through a series of hikes and talkbacks with the Sonoma Ecology Center and members of the Sonoma\, CA community who lived through the 2017 Tubbs Fire\, thanks in part to support from the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Explore More\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About The Composer\n \n\n\nDaniel Weidlein is a Los Angeles-based composer\, instrumentalist\, and producer whose work lives at the intersection of jazz\, chamber music\, and immersive performance art. Originally from Boulder\, Colorado\, his music weaves accessible melody and an ethos of empathy into expansive\, genre-crossing works.\n\n \nHis concert works focus on subjects that are inherently hard to talk about. Alongside From the Ashes\, his catalog includes CONE\, a multi-movement piece for jazz quartet and chamber choir exploring the generational\, inherited anxiety of being Jewish-American.\n \nIn 2018 he released Fire in the Sky\, his first collection of contemporary jazz compositions\, followed by the 2019 release of A Winter’s Lullaby. To celebrate the release of these albums\, he issued a separate vinyl edition of the three-movement piece The Red Line Suite. In 2024 he released a companion album to the film Sleepwalk called Music For Your Hi-Fi\, featuring original compositions in the style of 50s and 60s exotica and Brazilian jazz.\n \nHe composed the original score for independent films Sleepwalk (2024) and Mother (2026)\, orchestrated the Indigo Girls film musical Glitter and Doom\, and served as producer and orchestrator for The Shadow (2026) premiering at La Mirada Theatre. His production and arranging credits include the Budapest Recording Orchestra\, drag queens Peppermint\, Monét X Change\, and Sapphira Cristál\, and pop artists like Blake McGrath\, Kenton Chen\, and Lumi Jin. As a performer\, he has appeared in Whiplash\, on Glee\, and on NBC’s The Sing-Off.\n \nHe is also a longtime member of M•PACT\, the acclaimed vocal jazz ensemble\, and runs BioSoul Music\, a boutique recording studio in Silver Lake\, Los Angeles.\n \n \n \n \n \n About The Choreographer\n \nGwendolyn Hope Gussman is a director\, choreographer\, creative producer\, performer\, movement teacher\, and generative artist based between Denver\, Colorado (Ancestral Lands of Ute\, Cheyanne and Arapaho peoples) and New York City (Ancestral Lands of the Lenape peoples). Gussman is the Founder and Artistic Director of interdisciplinary performance company\, HOLDTIGHT (HT)\, which was established in 2016.
