SUMMARY:Sweeney Todd
DESCRIPTION:Department of Theatre & Dance\n \n \n \n \n \n Sweeney Todd\n \n \n \n \n \n Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim\nBook by Hugh Wheeler from an adaptation by Christopher Bond\n \n Buy Tickets: Feb 6 - Feb 16\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n“Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd . . .” \nIn the nearly half-century since Stephen Sondheim’s adaptation of a delectably lurid nineteenth-century melodrama premiered on Broadway\, it has become a modern classic. The title character is perhaps the most frightening and complex anti-hero in musical theatre\, a barber whose fury and despair over the loss of his innocent wife to a pitiless predator turns him into a serial killer with a witty and imaginative partner in crime\, his landlady\, Mrs. Lovett. Containing his most ambitious and challenging music\, Sweeney Todd is a fitting tribute to the great composer-lyricist who died in 2021. \nDirected by Meaghan Deiter\, whose recent productions at the College include Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! and Sondheim’s Company.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nEvening Presentations\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nTHU FEB 6 @ 7:30 PMFRI FEB 7 @ 7:30 PMSAT FEB 8 @ 7:30 PMTHU FEB 13 @ 7:30 PMFRI FEB 14 @ 7:30 PM **SAT FEB 15 @ 7:30 PM \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMatinee Presentations\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nSUN FEB 9 @ 2:00 PMSUN FEB 16 @ 2:00 PM \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n** Enjoy the perfect Valentine’s Day date night at Sweeney Todd with a buy-one-get-one ticket deal! This fully designed\, fully staged production from The Acting Company is part of the first-ever tour authorized by the Wilson estate\, which The Prior presents in partnership with Connecticut College and Middlebury College. \nSet in Civil Rights era-Pittsburgh\, Two Trains Running this work tells the story of restaurant owner Memphis Lee and his host of regulars\, searching for work\, love\, and justice as their neighborhood changes in unpredictable ways. SUMMARY:Irish Music Hour
DESCRIPTION:Department of Music\n \n \n \n \n \n Irish Music Hour\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nDiarmuid Ó Meachair (button accordion & melodeon) and Matt Mulqueen (piano) will perform a program featuring the music of PJ Conlon (1920s\, New York) and Joe Derrane (1940s\, Boston). \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nPeter Conlon\, the king of the melodeon was Peter James “PJ” Conlon\, an immigrant born in 1892 near Milltown\, County Galway who recorded some fifty commercial recordings between 1917 and 1929. PJ’s eldest sister Mary Ellen also played the melodeon and recorded a 78 rpm disc of her own in 1923. \nConlon began his recording career playing a German-made instrument like that used by John Kimmel but later switched to a more powerful eight-voice accordion from Baldoni Bartoli\, an Italian-American firm whose instruments became the preferred choice among Irish-American “box” players. He played at a fast pace but always in complete control\, and with a penchant for ornamentation and melodic variation. The Depression put an end to his recording career\, but Conlon continued to perform in bars and dance halls. A benefit concert was organized for him in 1935 at the fiddler James Morrison’s Celtic Hall in west Harlem. Though he lived until 1967\, Conlon was not musically active after 1951. His influence on later Irish players was immense and it could well be said that modern traditional Irish style on the button accordion started with P.J. Conlon. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nJoe Derrane electrified the world of Irish music back in the late 1940s when as a high school senior he recorded eight solo 78-rpm shellac discs for Boston’s Copley Records on the D/C# two-row button accordion. Through his recordings and performances\, this native Bostonian defined the state of the art in Irish-American button accordion playing. \nThe Boston-born son of Irish immigrants\, Joe Derrane was among the finest button accordionists in the history of Irish music. He was also a somewhat elusive legend in the genre. \nAfter recording during the 1940s and ‘50s\, he disappeared from the traditional music circuit for thirty-five years\, popping up again in 1994 at the Irish Folk Festival at Wolf Trap.  \nIn 2004 Derrane received one of the highest honors for a traditional musician: the National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Feb 13\, 20253:00 PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBrooks Concert Hall

SUMMARY:Jeremy Flower: A Series of Resolutions
DESCRIPTION:Prior Presents 2024–25\n \n \n \n \n \n Jeremy Flower: A Series of Resolutions\n \n RSVP: Thu Feb 27\, 2025 @ 7:00 PM\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nwith the Semiosis Quartet\n\nJeremy Flower\, multi-instrumentalist and composer of acoustic and electronic music\, will perform a piece commissioned by Composer-In-Residence Osvaldo Golijov at The Prior on February 27. \nLike much of Flower’s work\, A Series of Resolutions aims to live outside genre definitions\, creating a place where moments of harmonic exploration and dissonance can coexist with earnest melodies. The extended sonic tapestry allowed through live electronic manipulation of the string quartet is mixed with synthesized and sampled sounds which can sometimes leave the listener wondering where a particular sound is originating. \nFlower and Golijov have collaborated extensively on film and concert music\, most recently the score to Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis\, as well as the Grammy-nominated song cycle Ayre (2006) and the double Grammy Award-winning Ainadamar (2007). Flower finds himself at home on a concert stage supporting groups such as the Silkroad Ensemble\, or David Krakauer as well as in louder settings with long-time collaborators Carla Kihlstedt\, Matthias Bossi\, and Jon Evans. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n February 27\, 20257:00 PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free EntryRegistration Required \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nLuth Concert HallThe Prior Performing Arts Center \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Explore More

SUMMARY:Lacina Coulibaly | Until the Lion Tells the Story...
DESCRIPTION:Department of Theatre & Dance\n \n \n \n \n \n Lacina Coulibaly\n \n \n \n \n \n Until the Lion Tells the Story…\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nUntil the Lion Tells the Story… invites audiences to embrace the wisdom of Africa as a vital perspective in understanding our shared humanity. Drawing on the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence\, Coulibaly builds a transformative narrative inspired by ancient Egyptian practices and the writings of African intellectuals like Omotunde Kalala and Cheikh Anta Diop. The work explores themes of history\, memory\, and self-renewal\, reminding us that reconnecting with our past is key to understanding ourselves. \nWith lighting design by Roderick Murray\, costume design by Oumar Ouedraogo\, and set design by Sylvester Akakpo\, this performance promises to be a rich blend of artistry and storytelling. Music inspired by African traditions and sound composition by Kimathi Moore further enhance the experience. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nAbout the Artist\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBorn in Burkina Faso\, Lacina Coulibaly has crafted a career blending traditional African dance with contemporary influences\, creating a unique choreographic expression. His extensive experience spans collaborations with global companies\, teaching at esteemed institutions like Yale and Brown\, and performing in award-winning works. Coulibaly’s artistic vision bridges cultural traditions and modern innovations\, inspiring audiences worldwide. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n “I have always believed that dance is the sovereign expression of African arts. Life is about achievements and failures\, and one should not allow themselves to fail twice in the same way. As I said\, I am expressing in my performance\, in my journey\, the path I choose: self-determination\, trust in myself\, and sovereignty.” \n Lacina Coulibaly\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n March 126:00 PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nLuth Concert HallThe Prior Performing Arts Center \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Explore More

Comprised of 18 accomplished Black and Latino artists who reflect the highest level of musicianship in America\, a critical aim of the Sphinx Virtuosi is to evolve the breadth and impact of classical music through artistic excellence\, pioneering programming\, and impassioned community engagement. Its members serve as cultural ambassadors for audiences and communities around the United States and abroad. \nSince 2004\, the Sphinx Virtuosi’s concerts have been presented by leading arts organizations\, including annual return visits to Carnegie Hall as an established highlight of the fall season. Frequently selling out venues\, the ensemble has garnered effusive accolades\, including from The New York Times\, that has described the group as “top-notch…more essential at this moment than ever…a vibrant\, assured performance” and The Washington Post that wrote “true to their name\, the Sphinx Virtuosi call up the vision of an iconic mythological feline with its immeasurable power\, unwavering command\, and soulful beauty.” Their debut album\, Songs for Our Times\, was released on Deutsche Grammophon in July 2023 and represents the rich history of the Sphinx Organization and the vibrant future of classical music by centering the artistry of extraordinary composers and artistic visionaries.  \nTheir 2024-25 season includes performances for Washington Performing Arts and the John F. Kennedy Center\, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society\, the Symphony Center Presents in Chicago\, IL\, and a return performance at the New World Symphony in Miami. \nHeralded for its kaleidoscopically varied repertoire and bold thematic programming\, Sphinx Virtuosi concerts give prominence to historically excluded composers such as Samuel Coleridge-Taylor\, Alberto Ginastera\, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson\, Florence Price\, Heitor Villa-Lobos\, and George Walker. In an effort to expand its repertoire and engage new audiences\, the ensemble commissions new works annually. Commissions have included major new works from Michael Abels\, Terence Blanchard\, Valerie Coleman\, Xavier Foley\, Ricardo Herz\, Jimmy Lopez\, Jessie Montgomery\, Daniel Bernard Roumain\, and Carlos Simon.  \nMembers of the Sphinx Virtuosi have performed as soloists with major American orchestras\, including the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland\, Detroit\, Atlanta\, Philadelphia\, Seattle\, and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras. The Sphinx Virtuosi’s community engagement initiatives regularly extend beyond masterclasses and workshops to members leading community empowerment initiatives within arts organizations and connecting with other Sphinx programming to further the mission of achieving excellence through inclusive programming. As a bilingual ensemble\, these artist-citizens frequently break down existing barriers empowering the artform to connect with the broader community. For the American energy company Enron\, it was worth billions . . . until it wasn’t. When CEO Kenneth Lay gives golden boy Jeff Skilling free rein at Enron\, the company soars to new financial heights\, while whiz kid Andy Fastow struggles to keep the bubble from bursting. If more is always better and rules are only for everyday folks\, how could they possibly lose? \nThe British playwright Lucy Prebble’s darkly comic take on real-life events shows how ambition\, delusion and boy’s-club insiderism led to one of the biggest financial scandals of the new millennium. \nScott Malia directs. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nEVENING PRESENTATIONS\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nTHU APR 3 @ 7:30 PMFRI APR 4 @ 7:30 PMSAT APR 5 @ 7:30 PMTHU APR 10 @ 7:30 PMFRI APR 11 @ 7:30 PMSAT APR 12 @ 7:30 PM \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMATINEE PRESENTATIONS\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nSUN APR 6 @ 2:00 PMSUN APR 13 @ 2:00 PM \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n April 3\, 4\, 5\, 10\, 11\, and 12 at 7:30 PMApril 6 and 13 at 2:00 PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n $15 Public | $10 Holy Cross Community \n \n \n \n \n \n Contact the box office at priorboxoffice@holycross.edu for assistance with Card to Culture ticket purchases. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBoroughs TheatreThe Prior Performing Arts Center
