An immersive\, interactive work featuring Jie Ma\, pipa player (traditional Chinese lute)\, educator & sound artist; Brian Foreman\, percussionist and electronic musician; and Professor Brian Saia\, sound designer. \nWhere thousands of years of eastern tradition meet music technology\, it’s an evening that asks the question: what does it mean to remember through sound? \nThe performance is the culmination of a residency that brings Polytope Music into the classroom\, where students work alongside the artists to explore how tradition and technology can be woven into living sound. As the past speaks to the present\, Memory does what music has always done best — it draws us toward connection across generations and cultures\, time and space. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n September 10\, 20267:30 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry\, Reservation Required. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBoroughs TheatrePrior Performing Arts Center

SUMMARY:Wild & Tended | Mary Mackenzie\, soprano & Matthew Jaskot\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Department of Music\n \n \n \n \n \n Holy Cross Jazz Ensemble\n \n \n \n \n \n Funded by The Patrick E. Moriarty\, M.D. ’57 Visiting Scholars Program\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nAcclaimed Worcester-based soprano Mary Mackenzie and Matthew Jaskot present Wild & Tended\, a program of art song for soprano & piano. \nThe art song is a cultivated form — it emerged in the early 19th century\, as composers began to set poetry to music in a more deliberate and expressive way\, using melody\, harmony\, and rhythm\, to convey the emotional and psychological depth of the text. The 20th century saw significant changes in the genre\, with the influence of atonality\, serialism\, folk music\, and popular music. \nArt song was born as an intimate genre\, written to be performed in people’s homes — music for a room\, for a gathered circle of friends\, for a voice close enough to hear every detail. It continues to be a vibrant and diverse genre\, and this program lives in that tension — between the wild and the tended — tracing the art song from its Romantic roots to music written in our own time. \nProgram to include works by Clara Schumann\, Hugo Wolf\, Arnold Schoenberg\, Francis Poulenc\, John Frantzen and more. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n September 24\, 20267:30 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBrooks Concert Hall

From the irresistible pulse of Piazzolla’s Libertango to the architectural clarity of Hindemith\, the meditative timelessness of Pärt’s Fratres\, the playful energy of Lauren Bernofsky’s Blue Monkey\, and the lyrical warmth of Elaine Fine’s Trio\, each work offers a distinct musical voice while exploring the many ways instruments can listen\, respond\, challenge\, and inspire one another. Spanning nearly a century of musical styles\, the program reveals how composers with remarkably different musical languages all found compelling ways to transform conversation into sound. \nAstor Piazzolla | Libertango \nHindemith | Sonata for Viola and Piano Op. 11 No. 4 \nArvo Pärt | Fratres \nLauren Bernofsky | Blue Monkey \nElaine Fine | Trio for Violin\, Viola\, and piano \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 6\, 20267:30 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nLuth Concert HallPrior Performing Arts Center

SUMMARY:Holy Cross Wind Ensemble Concert | Nightfall
DESCRIPTION:Department of Music\n \n \n \n \n \n Nightfall\n \n \n \n \n \n Holy Cross Wind Ensemble\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nThe Holy Cross Wind Ensemble presents Nightfall\, a concert inspired by the changing season and the transition from day into night. As October gives us darker evenings\, the program takes listeners through autumn landscapes\, shifting light\, and imaginations running wild. \nAutumn is a season of change. The brilliant colors of fall in New England gradually give way to bare branches and longer nights\, creating a landscape that is stark\, reflective\, and mysterious. \nThe program begins in the warmth of the season with works such as Julie Giroux’s Bookmarks from Japan and Percy Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry. Eric Whitacre’s October captures the character of autumn itself\, evoking the feelings of the season through rich musical colors. \nAs the evening unfolds\, the music moves toward twilight\, mystery\, and darkness. Eric Whitacre’s Ghost Train draws upon American folklore and the imagination that emerges after nightfall. Together\, these works trace a path from daylight into night and from autumn toward winter\, exploring the beauty and mystery that accompany this seasonal transition. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 23\, 20267:30 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nLuth Concert HallPrior Performing Arts Center

Moriarty\, M.D. ’57 Visiting Scholars Program\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nThe Holy Cross College Choir will be performing a program of music from Scandinavia and the Baltics\, featuring Kreek’s Notebook by Award-winning Estonian composer Tõnu Kõrvits. \nEstonia has a rich tradition of choral music. The country plays host to the Estonian Song Festival\, which started in 1869 and currently runs every five years\, is one of the largest singing festivals in the world\, welcoming over 100\,000 people coming together to unite in song. Kreek’s Notebook celebrates the rich heritage of Estonian Choral Music through the use of native folk hymns collected by ethnomusicologist Cyrillus Kreek (1889–1962). Korvits weaves sacred folk hymns and texts collected by Kreek into his own distinct musical language. A multi-movement work for string orchestra and choir\, Kreek’s Notebook synthesizes traditional melodies with thrilling avant-garde string writing\, inviting the listener into moments of spiritual contemplation and visceral passion. \nAdditional works on the program include music by Arvo Pärt\, Veljo Tormis\, Algirdas Martinaitis\, and Laura Jekabsone. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n\n \n \n \n \n \n October 25\, 20263 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nSt. Joseph Memorial Chapel

DESCRIPTION:Department of Music\n \n \n \n \n \n Morton Feldman’s Triadic Memories\n \n \n \n \n \n Amy Williams\, piano\n \n \n \n \n \n Funded by The Patrick E. Moriarty\, M.D. ’57 Visiting Scholars Program\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMorton Feldman’s extraordinary late solo piano work\, Triadic Memories (1981)\, is a study in slowly evolving repetitions over the 75-minute duration. The composer described the piece as “the biggest butterfly in captivity.” \nExact repetitions\, subtle variations\, shifting patterns and fresh new materials are interwoven. Materials are constantly recontextualized\, using different voicing and registers\, changing one note of a chord\, juxtaposing new harmonies—always changing and always soft. The piece is not outwardly triadic (the harmonies are built entirely of seconds\, sevenths and augmented fourths)\, but triads emerge through the hazy resonance. Some materials happen only once\, while others are repeated\, varied and recontextualized. \nThe listener is taken on a journey of deep concentration and reflection. Pianist/composer Amy Williams has been connected to Feldman’s music since her childhood—her father and Feldman were close colleagues at the University of Buffalo. She has recorded and performed his music for nearly three decades. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n November 12\, 20267:30 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBrooks Concert Hall
