SUMMARY:The Vietnamese Áo Dài in a Time of War: Fashion\, Citizenship\, and Nationalism (1954–1975)
DESCRIPTION:Cantor Art Gallery\n \n \n \n \n \n The Vietnamese Áo Dài in a Time of War\n \n \n \n \n \n Fashion\, Citizenship\, and Nationalism (1954–1975)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nThe Vietnamese Áo Dài in a Time of War explores the significance of Vietnam’s national costume—the áo dài—during the Vietnam War. \nHonoring the 50th anniversary of a conflict\, the legacies of which continue to haunt us to this day\, the exhibition highlights the contributions of Vietnamese women to politics\, society\, and culture. Artifacts trace the history of the áo dài as a practical item of clothing and important symbol of Vietnamese heritage and identity in Vietnam\, among Vietnamese Americans\, and on the global stage—thus showing how a national costume can be both traditional and modern fashion with meanings that change over time and space. \nCo-curated by Professors Ann Marie Leshkowich (Anthropology\, College of the Holy Cross)\, Martina Nguyen (History\, Baruch College\, City University of New York)\, and Tuong Vu (Political Science\, University of Oregon). \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Exhibition Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nPanel: Fashion\, Politics\, and Cultural Identity: The Vietnamese Áo DàiThursday\, September 11 | 4:30 p.m.Rehm Library (Smith Hall) \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nOpening Reception: The Vietnamese Áo Dài in a Time of WarThursday\, September 11 | 6 p.m.Cantor Art Gallery \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nFilm Screening: Journey from the FallFriday\, September 12 | 5 p.m.Rehm Library (Smith Hall) \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nLiving Threads: Community\, Culture and the Áo DàiThursday\, October 23 | 4 p.m.The Beehive at The Prior \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nConcert: The Odyssey–from Vietnam to AmericaTuesday\, November 4 | 7:30 p.m.Luth Concert Hall in The Prior \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nWorkshop: The Politics of National Costume in AsiaFriday & Saturday\, November 7 & 8Rehm Library (Smith Hall) \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n August 26-December 19\, 2025 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nIris & B. SUMMARY:A Century of Piano Music: Sofia Gubaidulina Tribute | Liudmila Georgievskaya\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Department of Music\n \n \n \n \n \n A Century of Piano Music: Sofia Gubaidulina Tribute\n \n \n \n \n \n Liudmila Georgievskaya\, piano\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nThis program invites listeners into a rich tapestry of twentieth-century piano music where echoes of the Baroque tradition inspire new\, individual voices. \nIt opens with the shimmering\, impressionistic landscapes of Debussy’s Préludes\, whose titles are placed at the end of each piece to reflect his unique poetic approach. Bach’s enduring influence is celebrated in Busoni’s immortal piano transcription of the Chaconne from the Second Violin Partita\, a work that became an instant staple of the repertoire. Gubaidulina passionately reimagines the continuous variation form in her 1962 Chaconne. Throughout her life\, she felt a profound affinity with Bach\, especially in their shared fascination with number\, numerical symbolism\, and his chorales—elements that resonate strikingly and form the very foundation of her own Chaconne. Together\, these works chart a lineage of innovation—composers who\, like Debussy and Gubaidulina\, forged unconventional paths of timbral and structural exploration. \nThe journey culminates in Ralf Yusuf Gawlick’s Mysterium doloris quintae (Tropen-Kreuz)\, a meditation on the crucifixion that takes shape as a musical cruciform. Quotations from Bach\, Mozart\, and children’s songs from around the world intersect within an aural cross that binds Christ’s suffering to the pain of all innocents. Bach’s Mache dich\, mein Herze\, rein and the Crucifixus stand at its core\, while Mozart’s K.414 Andante and Contessa perdono introduce moments of purity\, mercy\, and forgiveness. Suspended between recitations of the Ave Maria plainchant\, the work collapses past and present\, revealing Golgotha as an ever-present reality wherever innocence suffers. In this cruciform\, suffering is transformed into a space where grace\, mercy\, and hope break through\, embodying Christ’s words: “Let the children come to me\, and do not prevent them. For such is the kingdom of heaven.” \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n\n \n \n \n \n \n October 25\, 20257:30 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Free entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nLuth Concert Hall

SUMMARY:Rasa String Quartet: Chamber Music Masterclass*
DESCRIPTION:Department of Music\n \n \n \n \n \n Rasa String Quartet\n \n \n \n \n \n Chamber Music Masterclass\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n*Funded by The Patrick E. Moriarty\, M.D. ’57 Visiting Scholars Program \nJoin us for this Chamber Music Masterclass from the Rasa String Quartet during their visiting artist residency with the Holy Cross Department of Music\, free and open to the public. \nThe Rasa String Quartet explores the musical space where classical and folk traditions intersect and influence one another. Formed in 2019\, the Boston-based ensemble brings together violinists Emma Powell and Maura Shawn Scanlin\, violist Kiyoshi Hayashi\, and cellist Mina Kim\, who are graduates of the New England Conservatory\, the Shepherd School of Music\, and Yale University. \nThe quartet has earned top prizes at competitions including Chamber Music in Yellow Springs\, Plowman Chamber Music Competition\, MTNA Chamber Music Competition\, and the Associazione Europea di Musica e Comunicazione (Italy). They’ve also served as ensemble-in-residence at Phillips Exeter Academy. Rasa has collaborated with renowned folk artists like Celtic harpist Maeve Gilchrist\, Irish fiddler Liz Carroll\, and singer-songwriter Judy Collins\, and have performed across the U.S. and abroad at events like the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition\, Celebrity Series of Boston\, Newport Classical\, Rockport Music\, Jordan Hall\, and the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival. \nTheir love of teaching has led to educational residencies at Bowdoin College\, Walnut Hill School for the Arts\, UMass Dartmouth\, and Boston Music Project\, among others. By exploring the connection between music and storytelling at the heart of folk traditions\, Rasa delivers fresh\, engaging performances that blend classical elegance with folk charm\, celebrate global musical roots\, and highlight underrepresented composers. In Sanskrit\, the term rasa refers to the indescribable power of art to move\, inspire\, and connect us—a quality Rasa String Quartet strives to embody in every performance. \nFind out more at rasastringquartet.com \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 28\, 20253:30 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Free Entry \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBrooks Concert Hall

SUMMARY:Six Characters in Search of an Author
DESCRIPTION:Department of Theatre & Dance\n \n \n \n \n \n Six Characters in Search of an Author\n \n \n \n \n \n By Luigi Pirandello\nTranslated by Edward Storer\nDirected by Steve Vineberg\n \n Buy Tickets: Oct 30 - Nov 9\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nIn this production from the Holy Cross Department of Theatre & Dance\, a theatre company preparing their latest production is disrupted by the appearance of six figures who claim to be characters abandoned by their author. They beg the director and actors to dramatize their story\, with results that are comic\, heartbreaking\, haunting and ultimately mysterious. \nLuigi Pirandello’s 1921 play challenges the assumptions of realism: can we really replicate human relationships\, with all their contradictions and complexity\, on the stage? Six Characters in Search of an Author is a modern classic that continues to exert a profound influence on theatre and film more than a century after it was first produced. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nEVENING PRESENTATIONS\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nOctober 30 @ 7:30 p.m.October 31 @ 7:30 p.m.November 1 @ 7:30 p.m.November 6 @ 7:30 p.m.November 7 @ 7:30 p.m.November 8 @ 7:30 p.m. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nMATINEE PRESENTATIONS\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nNovember 2 @ 2 p.m.November 9 @ 2 p.m. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Details\n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 30-31 @ 7:30 p.m.Nov 1\, 6-8 @ 7:30 p.m.November 2 and 9 @ 2 p.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Price\n \n \n \n \n \n \n $15 Public | $10 Holy Cross Community \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Venue\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBoroughs TheatreThe Prior Performing Arts Center \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Explore More
