SUMMARY:Queens\, Gods\, and Devotees: Selections from the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art

Courtesy of the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art. \n\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Cantor Art Gallery\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				 \n\nFeaturing over 30 paintings\, sculptures\, photographs\, prints\, and fiber works from c. 1900 to the present\, Queens\, Gods\, and Devotees foregrounds earthly and divine greatness\, and their associated devotional objects and ritual practices. Many of these images of exalted figures and concepts related to spirituality and worship are specific to the Black American experience\, or are re-imagined in a Black cultural context. References to Greek mythology\, the Judeo-Christian tradition\, ancient cultures and traditional African spiritual practices appear alongside one another.  \nThe exhibition includes work by celebrated artists including Romare Bearden\, Henry Ossawa Tanner\, Richmond Barthé\, John Biggers\, Willie Cole\, Shinique Smith\, Tawny Chatmon\, Imo Nse Imeh and Sharif Bey\, among others. Selections in Queens\, Gods\, and Devotees are drawn entirely from the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art. The PFF Collection is a targeted initiative to bring focus to the full range of African American visual creativity and its essential place in the history and discourse of American Art. As part of a growing and thoughtful dialogue about the African American experience through art\, the PFF Collection seeks to visually represent a cross-section of themes that speak not only to the African American community\, but also the broader American community.  \nCurated by Susanna W. DESCRIPTION:Department of Music\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Holy Cross Jazz Ensemble\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Funded by The Patrick E. Moriarty\, M.D. ’57 Visiting Scholars Program\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				 \n\nAcclaimed Worcester-based soprano Mary Mackenzie and Matthew Jaskot present Wild & Tended\, a program of art song for soprano & piano. \nThe art song is a cultivated form — it emerged in the early 19th century\, as composers began to set poetry to music in a more deliberate and expressive way\, using melody\, harmony\, and rhythm\, to convey the emotional and psychological depth of the text. The 20th century saw significant changes in the genre\, with the influence of atonality\, serialism\, folk music\, and popular music. \nArt song was born as an intimate genre\, written to be performed in people’s homes — music for a room\, for a gathered circle of friends\, for a voice close enough to hear every detail. Misunderstanding\, compassion\, resentment\, egoism\, love\, loss\, betrayal—moving through or attempting to compartmentalize complex dynamics between family and friends and the emotional baggage we collect over time becomes an overwhelming task that piles up. BRKFST fosters individuality and community through creation\, performance\, and mentorship while providing education in movement technique\, methodology\, and choreography. Founded in 2014\, BRKFST specializes in performance art that combines breaking\, hip hop’s first dance form\, with abstraction and non-codified vernacular to create emotionally resonant and physically rigorous works. DESCRIPTION:Department of Music\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Traditional Irish Music\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				 \n\nAccordion player Diarmuid Ó Meachair and Galway fiddle player Ellie Egan will play a selection of music from East Galway. \nThe traditional music of East Galway is known for its unhurried pace\, lyrical expression\, and strong rhythm. Unlike the faster\, highly ornamented styles of other regions like Sligo\, the East Galway style focuses closely on the smooth flow of the melody and a soulful\, down-to-earth feel. \nThis concert will feature music from legendary east Galway figures such as Paddy Fahey\, Paddy Kelly\, Conor Tully\, Paddy Carty and Joe Burke.
