Nightfall

The Holy Cross Wind Ensemble presents Nightfall, a concert inspired by the changing season and the transition from day into night. As October gives us darker evenings, the program takes listeners through autumn landscapes, shifting light, and imaginations running wild.

Autumn is a season of change. The brilliant colors of fall in New England gradually give way to bare branches and longer nights, creating a landscape that is stark, reflective, and mysterious.

The program begins in the warmth of the season with works such as Julie Giroux’s Bookmarks from Japan and Percy Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry. Eric Whitacre’s October captures the character of autumn itself, evoking the feelings of the season through rich musical colors.

As the evening unfolds, the music moves toward twilight, mystery, and darkness. Eric Whitacre’s Ghost Train draws upon American folklore and the imagination that emerges after nightfall. Together, these works trace a path from daylight into night and from autumn toward winter, exploring the beauty and mystery that accompany this seasonal transition.
