Arts Transcending Borders | reimagined

The Prior is happy to announce a newly reimagined Arts Transcending Borders program (ATB|r) seeking to provide opportunities for individual faculty to conceptualize unique, arts-inspired engagements. As an extension of the artistic curatorship role of the Nancy Savage Skinner ‘79 Director, proposals will be reviewed, and those approved will be slated for inclusion in the 2027-28 presenting season. Acting as producer, the Director will personally take on each of the approved projects and work to bring the concept elements to life. The workflows of the Prior teams will be activated to provide financial, promotional, production, and engagement support. The program seeks to enrich the overall offerings of the Prior Performing Arts Center, add to the depth of the ecosystem of the college, and provide meaningful connections more broadly.

Proposals will include two elements: a Transcendent Community Engagement Residency culminating in a Capstone Artistic Expression. The Community Engagement should consist of a short-duration residency filled with imaginative and impactful interactions that might include, but are not be limited to, master classes, skill-building exercises, applied workshops, panel conversations, rapid ideations, or design sprints. The interactions should be aimed to bring together constituents of our community in transcendent ways. The effort should find ways to connect disparate departmental and academic disciplines, including the introduction of unique curricular assignments. It should also find ways to bridge social, cultural, religious, generational, and geographic communities both within the college and beyond the campus boundaries. The Capstone Artistic Expression can span a broad array of formats, including performances, presentations, or screenings. The effort should aim to have those connected through the Transcendent Community Engagements gather for a shared experience of the Capstone Artistic Expression.

Curricular Engagement with The Prior

The Prior Performing Arts Center supports meaningful engagement with the arts for students across the College, advancing the Holy Cross’ commitment to inclusive excellence by exposing students to models of creative practice that emphasize process, experimentation, and risk.

We  partner with colleagues from every department to foster innovative experiential learning opportunities inspired by the multidisciplinary arts, and we welcome your ideas about ways you might draw on the center’s unique resources in your teaching.

Visiting artists in any season are typically available for classroom visits and other curricular connections while in residence at Holy Cross. To explore the possibility of connecting your class with a visiting artist, contact Marta Beyer at mbeyer@holycross.edu. Prior staff will be glad to provide you with class-specific materials,  share residency resources guides, work with you to develop links to your curriculum, or visit your class for a pre-show discussion or post-event debrief.

The performance, production, and communication from The Prior were all excellent.

The students love to be able to see real professionals embrace what we are currently discussing in class.

Patrick O'Konis

Faculty, College of the Holy Cross

It was good for students to see a working writer [and] also great to have them understand that writing, publishing, and even the endeavor of being a college student is a process.

Oliver de la Paz

Faculty, College of the Holy Cross

The experience was thrilling due to the design of the venue, the excellent performance, and the opportunity to be with colleagues and students outside of the classroom.
